The Colorado School of Mines

Alright, this may be a long post so let’s not forget the Disclaimer... And because it is likely that we will have so first time readers on this post I'll instruct you to go read it... Or much more likely just read this and I'll give you a synopsis: Don't talk about this blog in the real world.
Ok...
First off, I admit to not having written in a long time. But that is only because I feel that blogging is not a very good waste of time… Minesweeper on the other hand is a very good waste of time with very little time commitment. I also feel that the people that may actually read my blog have minesweeper of their own to play, so the more I write, the more time they will spend reading… It’s a vicious spiral of less minesweeper, so that should explain my absence.

So far college has been awesome, I can see why some people spend six years here learning then come back for twenty years of teaching. The food does get kinda old but that doesn’t really matter, a buffet every meal is still cool. There are usually a couple of cool things to do every week, like free bowling or a comedian. As far as my classes are going:

Principals of Chemistry II: Is way easy, the material we are going over I did in January, so I figure that I have another month of coasting on previous knowledge. The first test was like September 18th and I could have passed it over a year ago.

Freshman Success Seminar: Biggest waste of time, money, faculty, and resources ever. I believe the class was created for two reasons; to integrate freshmen into CSM, and to force them to attend events that they may not have. The second part, while shouldn’t be forced upon freshmen, I do agree with. The main reason I dislike CSM 101 is because all of the activities are done on your own time, meaning that once a week we have to attend a class (they take attendance) in which we get to play “the name game” with the same people we did last week.

Physical Education: They take attendance here too, but the instructor is cool. He too knows that gym at an engineering school is a joke, so about half of the classes have been, “go home and study.” However, I do seem to be much stronger and faster than I was. In January the new recreation center will be open http://www.mines.edu/stu_life/recsports/index.htm and I will go swimming and rock climbing.

Calculus for Science Engineers II Honors: The test for this class is later today, so we shall see how skilled I am. Unfortunately, I am not feeling very good about this test but keep reading and you will understand…

Physics I – Mechanics: In the lecture I understand everything and show my knowledge with my assigned clicker. However, in the studio I don’t have a flawless understanding of the material. The test for Physics was Tuesday (I think) and I got the only perfect score on the multiple guess section that I know of. And I call it multiple guess because if you look at my work for one of the questions it says “Enie Meanie Miney Moe,” Big Meanie hasn’t failed me yet.

Earth and Environmental Systems: The lecture is enjoyable; we mostly talk about hurricanes, weather patterns, and the history of the earth. The lab however is three hours of looking at rocks, most days it doesn’t last that long, like right now I am scheduled to be in it.

Overall: 16.5 credit hours seem fine for a freshman. Most likely I will study more (than none) in the coming weeks, as the next wave of testing is less than a month away.

So now let’s talk about the people that affect my life. I am leaving some people off intentionally such as instructors and the like.

Me: As hard to believe as it is, I still affect my life. Well, Out of class I am the President of the Juggling Club. I believe that I am the only freshmen president of a student organization but I am not positive. We are now one of the bigger clubs on campus with over twenty people at our meetings. I also host a “Monday night movie” where I rent a projector and invite the rest of Randall to watch. In addition I play on my floor’s flag football team.

Ahriel: Well, if anybody else has an affect on me here then most likely it would be my roommate. He is from Brazil and moved here when he was ten I believe. He likes chess almost to an insane degree, if he is in the room he is playing it. This is unfortunately, now getting in the way of his homework. His days are fairly packed with school, Brazilian martial arts, chess, work, and meeting his dad. Apparently his dad is an electrical professor here. Ahriel is cool, he was headed down the “WOW” path for a while but managed to uninstall before it consumed him.

Mike: The first week we decided that he would be Mike and I would be Michael. He lives with Scott in 007, and is usually in there studying. He is an only child of parents who didn’t allow TV. So you kinda get the idea…

Scott: Spends most of his time on the internet. He seems to lead Mike as they went to high school together. Not the kind of person that I could see someone spending time with.

Nate: Is the local RA, I barely know him. He is usually in his room chewing and playing online poker. The rest of the time he is at Blackhawk. He seems cool / lenient. He played football for most of his life, except for this year, where he is just quarterback for “The Base.” He defiantly is carrying the team too.

Luke: The VP of juggling club, lives with Chris (BC) in 005, is probably the coolest on the floor. His parents are moving to like Nigeria so just about every weekend he is saying goodbye to them.

Chris (BC): BC = Bad Chris, might be an unfair name because the other one is pretty bad too. The more fitting Hick Chris is too hard to say, so we call him BC. Everything he says is so hick-ish it’s funny. He always says the toughest things too, even though he is 6 foot and like 100lbs. It is kinda scary to look at him, he is just bones.

Chris (JC): JC = Jock Chris, is very athletic for an engineer. He would be cool if he didn’t speak. Sorry. If somebody says something and he wasn’t paying attention or was across the room he will walk over and say, “What are we talking about?” If nobody says anything he will walk up and say, “So what’s going on?” Despite the obvious answer usually present. After somebody says something he will say, “Yeah,” then repeat it. While it’s obvious he doesn’t know what the topic is. BC does this too but it’s so easy to ignore him.

Trevor: Lives with JC in 003, and spends most of his time sucked in to “WOW.” He is 6’2” 210lbs so whenever we meet we pseudo fight in some way. He is probably the third coolest after Luke and I.

Brody: Very un-cool, fortunately he stays in his room most of the time. Whenever he has juggling balls he has to be the only one jugging and everyone else has to be watching him. He isn’t very good. The floor’s only out-of-state.

I am many steps closer to finding THE solution to minesweeper, bring it Phill.
